Open Call for Academic Proposals for NPIP Research Pilot

The National PET Imaging Platform (NPIP) is pleased to announce the launch of a new opportunity to apply for pilot funding to facilitate access to state-of-the-art Total Body PET scanners.
Applications are invited from academic institutions, including individual academics, for pilot funding on two themes which will:

1. Supplement current grant-funded studies to enable additional scans to be performed on the entire body.

2. Support cross-network opportunities and initiatives to strengthen the network.

2024/2025 pilot-funded pot is very limited, and we encourage applicants to ensure they seek other funding avenues in addition to applying for this.

Priority

Study Type and Description

1 Support clinical diagnostic service scans with funding to perform a second scan on the total-body system and image analysis to examine and develop new clinical protocols
2 Support clinical research studies and scans with funding to perform a second scan and image analysis on the total-body system to examine and develop new protocols
3 For all studies/protocols, support addition of control subjects to build age-matched controls
4 Pilot studies (no more than 10 patients) to explore potential of total-body PET in new scientific areas/patient groups with the goal to use data to apply for other external funding

Priority

Study type and Description

1 Support travel and expenses for team members to be involved in validation and qualification of total-body PET system
2 Support establishment of key tracers at each site or at a single site to provide access of tracer to the network
3 Support initiative for development of common clinical protocols, SOPs and PET modelling

The National PET imaging platform NPIP is the UK’s first-of-its-kind national total-body PET imaging platform. With an investment of £32 million from the UK Government through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the National PET Imaging Platform’s groundbreaking total-body PET technology platform aims to drive the nation’s reputation as a global life science superpower.

Users of the Total Body PET technology will have unprecedented access to cutting-edge infrastructure and clinical intelligence. We believe innovation, specialist skills and expertise are fundamental to maximising the potential of total-body PET, illustrating a richer picture of human health for clinical research Our vision, is that every research programme that joins the NPIP platform will help to deliver life-changing breakthroughs in medical science.. Where possible research programmes and trials data and information will be accessible across the PET community, to help us discover and develop new drugs, diagnostics, and therapies, ultimately delivering better patient outcomes and increased healthcare efficiencies.

There is a limited pot of funding available for this first call, therefore we encourage all applicants to seek alternative funding in parallel to proceeding with the NPIP funding call. Unsuccessful applicants will be added to our list of potential users for the National Platform when it is fully launched, and we will be in touch to discuss alternative routes to accessing the Platform.

The closing date for submissions is Saturday, 14 September 2024 at 5pm.

Applications will be reviewed between October and December, with outcomes to be provided in Q1 2025.
